A Newly Designed US-foreign Trade Policy?
The German Perspective

Thursday, May 25th, 2017
at 4:30pm to 6:00pm

80 Pine Street, 24th Floor
New York, NY 10005

Since the new US-administration took office, the transatlantic debate on trade has considerably changed its tune. It seems that border tax adjustment, bilateralism, reciprocity, trade deficits, and tariff increases are dominating the
US-debate. What are the ramifications for a trade nation like Germany, whose number one trade destination is the USA? What are possible reactions by trading partners? Do TTIP talks have a future?

The Speaker:

Matthias Machnig
State Secretary,
Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy

Matthias Machning has been serving as the State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany since October 2014. Prior to this, he was Minister for Economics, Labour and Technology in the Free State of Thuringia (2009-2013), State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (2005-2009), and State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing (1998-1999).

Mr. Machning was involved in the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) as a campaign manager for the 2014 European elections, as a Head of the SPD Federal Manager and coordinator of the campaign headquarters from 1995 to 1998, and as a Deputy head of division at the parliamentary group in 1991-1992.

After obtaining his Abitur (university-entrance qualification) in 1979 at Walram-Gymnasium in Menden (Sauerland), Mr. Machnig studied Sociology in Münster.

Mr. Machnig will be accompanied by Dr. Berend Diekmann, Head of Division, USA, Canada and Mexico and Moneim Eltohami from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.
