The year 2010 turned out to be a good year for Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a videotaped New Year’s greeting. This despite legitimate concerns, she said.
The number of unemployed in Germany is the lowest in almost 20 years. Germany coped with the international economic crisis like hardly any other country, and it even emerged stronger. “And it is above all because of you,” she said, addressing her fellow citizens. Germany is so successful because citizens do their work day after day, she said, rising early, working on weekends and holidays, caring about their assignments and about their coworkers.
Germany will have to demonstrate its strengths in the future as well, Merkel said. Europe is in the midst of an enormous test. “We must strengthen the euro,” she said.
United Europe is the guarantee for peace and freedom, and the euro is the basis for Europe’s prosperity, Merkel said. Germany needs Europe and its common currency, for its own well-being and to handle great challenges.
“We Germans assume our responsibilities – even if they are very difficult sometimes,” Merkel said.
