Cultural Risk Assessment

Managing the Hidden Risk Factor that Sabotages 60% of Foreign Direct Investment Projects

Foreign direct investment (FDI), off-shoring, near-shoring and outsourcing often seem like great business moves… on paper. Unfortunately roughly 60% of these investments fail to bring the expected returns, due to unforeseen, unmanaged, negative intercultural interactions. The hidden iceberg of national culture as an operational risk in business has been largely left to the intuition of individual managers, or “soft-skills” training, with often disastrous results.

The seminar is designed to empower real understanding of cultural risk in international business projects. Participants will be lead through a discussion examining culture as a critical risk factor, exploring how it impacts operations and why the business community has largely rejected traditional mitigation techniques. The presentation will culminate with the proposition of an innovative, economically derived, quantitative framework for describing, understanding and managing this most stubborn, and, above all, costly of risk factors.

The discussion will be led by Matthew Murrell, CEO of The Foreign Investment Group and an expert on the subject of culturally driven operational risk.
