Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Series:

"Innovation in the Legal Sector"

In today's market environment companies have to be innovative to thrive, sometimes even just to survive. Mostly, companies prove their innovative potential by inventing new products and rolling them out to their relevant markets.

Law firms are different. Like all professional service firms they are "a breed apart" (Jay Lorsch). Law firms don't invent products for their clients, they offer advisory services. Therefore law firms have traditionally not been expected to innovate.

This seems to have changed. It is common belief today that law firms have to be innovative to survive hyper-competition in the legal market. In that regard, law firms are being compared more and more to other "normal" companies that rely on innovation to thrive. Following this development, many law firms have begun to emphasize their innovative potential, even though it is not always clear what is meant by the term "innovation" when used in the context of the legal sector.

This course deals with the concept of innovation in law firms, providing participants with definitions and applicability of innovation. Guest speaker Richard Walker, Deutsche Bank's General Counsel, will talk about innovative concepts to raise the level of professionalism within the legal function of Deutsche Bank.
