European Commission Seeking Input on Effects of “Buy American”

In the context of the global economic crisis, an increasing number of developed and developing countries, including the United States and China, are adopting or reinforcing policy measures which are likely to limit the positive impact of stimulus packages to domestic operators in the field of government procurement.

The European Commission has prepared a short questionnaire to enable decision taking by the Commission concerning possible steps in addressing such measures: (1) Are you aware of measures that limit participation of foreign suppliers in public tender procedures? (2) Have you encountered any cases where there seems to be a discrimination of a German supplier on the basis of its nationality to the advantage of local suppliers? (3) Have you encountered any cases where discrimination of a German supplier appears to be based on criteria suggesting a local preference (i.e. previous experience, use of certain technology or standards, need to employ local workforce, etc)? (4) Has the development of these "Buy American" policies impacted your business plans and/or your initial intentions to participate in a tender procedure in a third country? (5) Have any of these policies affected your usual sourcing from Germany or other third country suppliers in view of on-going or future procurements? Please send all responses preferably before 15th September 2009 to trade-industry@ec.europa.eu. For further info, please contact Mr. Marc Poulain or Ms. Esther Nieto, Directorate-General for Trade, Public Procurement Unit, Brussels, Tel.: 0032 2 2986396

German Companies Edge Into US Renewable Energy Market

Germany's renewable energy companies are establishing themselves and earning profits in the growing US energy market. But American companies shouldn't be ruled out of the competition quite yet, some analysts say.
In the United States, Phoenix, Arizona is seen by many renewable energy enthusiasts as an idyllic solar capital. It's the fifth-largest city in the US and boasts more than 300 days of sunshine a year. The only thing missing from this solar center is solar technology.
Some German renewable energy companies are hoping to change that. They've set up shop in the southwestern US state that was the first to enact a law requiring that 15 percent of its electricity comes from renewable sources by 2025. >>> Read the full article

Roadshow Through Germany

The United States’ strong economy of over 300 million consumers positions the country as the largest and most attractive market in the world. In contrast to many European countries, the US will see a strong population increase over the coming years and offer dynamic growth opportunities. The American government under the leadership of President Obama will fight the current economic crisis with a stimulus program worth almost $800 billion. German companies will also profit from the package – directly through government contracts and indirectly through strengthened US consumer demand. German products and services benefit from a reputation for quality; they are technologically competitive, and they are recognized by the seal, “Made in Germany.” In light of this background, the experts at the German American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (GACC) will be hosting a Germany-wide Road Show this September. The focus of the event will be to introduce interested German companies the market opportunities in the largest market in the world. The GACC has main offices in Atlanta, Chicago, and New York, as well as branches in Houston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. The various offices cover the different regions of the US, which alone have economies of OECD countries; California’s economic activity, for example, is on the same level as Italy. Texas is comparable to South Korea, and New York’s has a larger economy than Turkey. Roadshow dates are: Sept. 14th: IHK Frankfurt/Main; Sept. 15th: IHK Stuttgart; Sept. 16th : IHK München; Sept. 17th: HK Hamburg; Sept. 18th: IHK Düsseldorf
