Mage Solar GmbH eyes Sun Belt trio

03/19/2010

(Atlanta Business Journal)

A German solar energy company is considering planting its U.S. headquarters in the Peach State. Mage Solar GmbH confirmed it is eyeing Georgia — along with Mississippi and Arkansas — for a U.S. headquarters location and the site of a solar module production plant that, the company said, would employ about 350 within the next five years. Mage’s investment could exceed $100 million and eventually generate more than 600 jobs, a source familiar with the deal said. “All three states have been able to provide us with suitable locations for our business,” Mage Solar spokeswoman Jenny Kelly said. “We are still in negotiations; a final decision hasn’t been made.” Winning Mage’s module plant is important, sources said, because it would help fill out Georgia’s solar industry supply chain. While home to a fast-growing cell maker and several solar installation firms, the state lacks the module makers that assemble dozens of solar cells into panels that are then installed on buildings.
