East Rutherford-based pharmaceutical company Cambrex Corp. said that it bought a privately held German company that specializes in industrial biocatalysis. Biocatalysis is the use of natural catalysts, such as protein enzymes, to perform chemical transformations on organic compounds. The company, IEP GmbH, based in Wiesbaden, Germany, provides customized biocatalytic process development and sales of enzymes to the pharmaceutical industry, Cambrex said. Financial terms were not disclosed. "In combination with our existing chiral chemistry business, the acquisition of IEP will result in Cambrex being able to offer a broad biocatalysis platform to the pharmaceutical industry," said Steven Klosk, Cambrex's president and chief executive officer in a statement. Cambrex, with 850 employees, provides products and services to speed the development and commercialization of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients.
