On October 18th, the German offshore wind industry came to New Jersey for the German American Offshore Wind Conference.  This resoundingly successful conference was part of a weeklong delegation of five German companies involved throughout the wind energy supply chain.  These companies met with the market players from Maine to South Carolina.  The delegates, joined by representatives of Siemens Energy, the Offshore Wind Development Coalition, NRG Bluewater Wind and more, presented at the conference at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, NJ to a full crowd of businesses involved in the industry.

The conference, which was supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), had the goal of raising awareness of the developments in offshore wind in Europe as well as helping to spur growth in the US.  Highlights of the event included a presentation by Michael Durstewitz of the Fraunhofer Institute, detailing the research achievements of the Alpha Ventus offshore wind park in the North Sea.  The experience and information gathered at this site will undoubtedly be instrumental in streamlining the development of future projects.  Robert Instinsky of Kuehne + Nagel, the sponsor of the evening reception following the event, also gave a informative overview of the logistical challenges that face the offshore wind industry as it continues to grow.  He emphasized a need for international standards to make this growth sustainable.

In addition to the BMWi and Kuehne + Nagel, the German American Offshore Wind Conference received the support of several organizations including the German Consulate General of New York, the German Center for Research and Innovation and Main(e) International Consulting.  Each of these organizations sees offshore wind playing a major role in stabilizing the electricity supplies in both Germany and the US.  The knowledge shared and the connections made at the conference are a step in the right direction for this young industry.
